A photoshoot and interview with Sudanese music artist Emmanuel Jal for the forthcoming 'Picha Mtaani' documentary to be released on 29th July 2010 in Nairobi. Picha Mtaani, Swahili for ‘street exhibition’, is a youth led peace initiative that primarily seeks to create space for young people to reconcile and become agents of reconciliation to their respective communities. Two years after Kenya’s worst election violence which left 1,500 dead and hundreds of thousands internally displaced, Kenya is a nation in search of its identity. Picha Mtaani aims at providing a platform for national reflection and building local reconstruction consensus through photo exhibitions and conversation. This project aims at organizing target communities to play their part in the reconciliation and reconstruction process. Boniface Mwangi is an award winning journalist, who is based in Nairobi. He is the first Kenyan photojournalist to win the CNN Multichoice Journalist Award (CNN Africa Photojournalist of the Year 2008). Boniface Mwangi is also founder of Picha Mtaani, a youth-led national reconciliation initiative in Kenya Emmanuel Jal, an ex-child soldier turned rap artist, founder of GUA Africa. The word GUA (pronounced gwaah) means peace in Nuer, a tribal language of Southern Sudan.
