Freelance profile
David Marshall
Freelance for twenty years. Today I write about walking and the outdoors; I work across Europe and Scandinavia; supported by my activities as a rambler, mountaineer, winter sportsman and sailor. Active membership of organizations like BirdWatch Ireland (education officer) and engagement with a number of conservation projects means that I write regular features on re-introduction programmes, conservation, biodiversity and our natural and built landscapes. My new blog WalkingWithDavid.com and twitter handle (@BestWalks) launch spring 2012. I currently write technical reviews of clothing and equipment. Formerly a specialist in industrial relations (1970-90's) and a technical writer (1990-2010).

Extra information:
Although currently focused on writing about walking and the outdoors, I have..
I can write to sell, to motivate, to win support, to entertain, to explain, to train and to educate. And combinations of those. It depends upon your needs. And if you are not sure of your needs, your market, or your audience, I can help you work those out too. And I have...
A broad writing experience:
Which varies, from writing evidence for UK Govt. committees of enquiry, through to workplace manuals and technical reports. From contributing to books on using computers to outdoor walking guides. And an extensive range of business education reference guides and training materials. I have also had some small experience with local radio journalism, online journalism, RSS feeds, pod casting and am currently video blogging
Technical savvy, social media and sales.
I have been using computers since 1969, email since 1978 and the internet regularly since 1986. I stay abreast of developments in rich media. I am educated to post degree level, hold an MA and PhD and have taught regularly at a number of UK universities. I am currently developing an innovative approach to the integration of print media (books and brochures) with online and mobile rich media presentations and resources. For example recent features have provided QR codes for links to rich media material accessible by mobile phone to add value to the retail material. I understand how to exploit current social media facilities and associated trends to support the sale of print material or subscription to online services.
Personal interests:
As a published poet, I also perform occasionally for fun. Hobbies include anything with mountains, wind and water. From mountaineering and trekking to sailing and cruiser yacht racing; kite buggying to x-country skiing. I am an amateur naturalist and have an active interest in the natural and built environments, architecture, vernacular architecture and heritage. I am active within a number of community organizations, and a cruiser-class captain.
Locations:
I have working bases in Dublin, North Wales, East Midlands & SW France. I travel the EU/Norway frequently.
