I'm the author of Out Of It: A Cultural History of Intoxication (Penguin, 2001, revised edn Dean Street Press, 2016) and Humanity: A Natural History of Human Emotions (Atlantic Books, 2004, reissued Dean Street Press, 2016), In The Realm of the Senses: A Materialist Theory of Seeing and Feeling (Zero Books, 2016) and a novel, The First Day in Paradise (Roundfire, 2016), as well several books on wine, spirits, cocktails, etc. I write for newspapers, magazines, websites and two restaurant guides, and also accept speaking engagements. I'm particularly interested in book reviewing, in the fields of cultural history, philosophy, drug cultures, gastronomy and wine. As well as the NUJ, I'm a member of the Circle of Wine Writers.
