Freelance profile
Andrew Simpson
I am a freelance journalist, interviewer and subeditor who reports on sport and mental health – usually separately, but increasingly together. My writing has appeared in a broad range of publications, from national and local newspapers to magazines and digital outlets. Self-motivated, adaptable and pragmatic, I switch between telling the story of my hometown’s Olympic champion and another on an octogenarian crown green bowler’s first title. I have developed specialisms several Olympic Games disciplines, including athletics, gymnastics and rowing, as a well as crown green bowls, football, motorsport and rugby union.

Extra information:
I worked for 14 years as a senior reporter and sub editor for a range of weekly newspaper titles and associated websites, taking responsibility for all print and digital production.
I have written extensively on a wide range of subject areas, nurturing expertise in football finance as well as public and planning policy connected to sport.
My main achievements in that role were:
- Gradually changing emphasis of newsgathering so neglected readers were better served, for example introducing comprehensive coverage of crown green bowls and netball
- Devising, refining and delivering projects tailored to attract new audiences such as collaborating with local school sport partnership for series of monthly features and another to increase visibility of women’s sport
- Conceiving ideas for print supplement to celebrate town’s first Olympic champion and used contacts nurtured over time to generate stories packed with exclusive material
- Handling fast-moving and legally-sensitive case of Northwich Victoria FC’s failed administration, providing news, analysis and comment on a highly-complex story while maintaining attention to detail and an ability to explain in clear language
